We checked in at Manchester Airport at some unearthly hour and killed
time before boarding our flight with KLM. Becky still didn't know
where we were heading which helped distract her a little from her
fear of flying. Paul had given her an envelope with all the details
of the honeymoon which we agreed would be opened once we were airborne.
Before
we knew it, we were on our way to Amsterdam and Becky was able to
hide her disappointment that we were not Bognor bound. Instead,
we were heading for Tanzania - a luxury safari followed by a stay
on a remote, paradise island off the coast of Zanzibar.
KLM very kindly gave us four mini-bottles of Champagne to cheer
her up a little!
After changing at Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport, we were soon passing
over mile upon mile of desert on a very comfortable Business Class
flight bound for Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. Kili's airport was a little
chaotic but, once through immigration, we were soon met by representatives
of CC Africa with whom the honeymoon had been booked.
We were transferred by road to Arusha where we were to spend the
night at the Arusha Coffee Lodge. On arriving, we were immediately
hit by both the smell of coffee and the rush of staff eager to take
our bags to our room. Around ten staff for four bags seemed a little
excessive but we soon realised that this was just the Tanzanian
way - they weren't contesting with each other for tips, they were
simply eager to greet and welcome us.
Our room at the Lodge was superb but unfortunately we were too tired
to fully appreciate it. We had some of our KLM Champagne and went
to bed, with our safari proper due to start the next morning.
