This morning we got and up and walked through the coffee trees to
get to breakfast. Once refereshed with creals, fruit juice, cooked
breakfast and, of course, coffee, we set off for Arusha Airport
- not your typical airport as you'll see from the check-in photograph
below.
After
flying on a small Regional Air plane via Lake Manyara and Klein's
Camp, we eventually reached Grumeti River Camp in the Serengeti,
Northern Tanzania. En route we flew over an active volcano called
Ol Doinyo Lengai (or 'Mountain of God') and saw a number of animals
- mostly wildebeest and zebra herds probably, but Paul spotted a
few elephants and we both saw a giraffe.
At Grumeti, we were met by Peter, the manager, and Rueben who was
to be our own butler for the duration of our stay. The Camp was
situated on a tributary to the Grumeti River, and was packed with
hippos that you could hear chomping on the lush vegetation.
We were shown to the honeymoon tent by Rueben after a briefing from
Peter, we had lunch (Greek salad followed by delicious, fresh pizza,
and pineapple and raspberry sorbet to finish) and watched the hippos.
A few hours later we were experiencing our first game drive with
our ranger, Wilfred, and two other guests from the UK, Ken and Kim,
who were seasoned visitors of the CC Africa lodges and enjoying
their third stay at Grumeti.
Well, what can we say... we saw everything from termite mounds to
Thompson gazelles. Wildebeest, zebras, ostriches, dig-digs, mongooses
(mongeese?!), a tawny eagle (which we saw kill a small bird), giraffes,
Grant and Thompson gazelles, a lioness and three cubs, and more...
a lot to take in and a little awe-inspiring!
We returned to the Camp, showered under the stars, and were accompanied
to dinner for safety reasons since the accommodation is not fenced
off from the wildlife.
