The
day started with a similar routine to yesterday, with Rueben bringing
us tea, juice and biscuits, before our morning game drive. This
time we saw a hyena with a very full stomach and blood stains on
its coat after what must have been a very recent meal. There were
also a number of vultures in the vicinity.
By this time we were getting a little blazé about the numerous
sightings of wildebeest, zebras, giraffes, Thompson gazelles and
ostriches but it was truly amazing how plentiful the wildlife was.
We also saw topi, yet another member of the antelope family.
We returned for breakfast and relaxed by the plunge pool where Paul
was duly stung by a wasp. Rueben, being the great butler that he
was, was on to it in a flash and pulled out the sting and massaged
any pain away.
Incredible!
After
lunch (starter: avocado and onions in a dressing; main: ravioli
with pumpkin inside in a cheese sauce, dessert: lemon ice cream)
Becky went on another game drive whilst Paul joined the Grumeti
River Camp stuff for a game of football. This was an experience
not to be missed... a kick-about on the plains of the Serengeti
with lions not all that far away! It was 'skins versus shirts' and,
since Paul was playing for the 'skins', he's not too difficult to
spot in the pictures. :-)
Meanwhile, on the game drive (which included a stop to watch the
football!), Becky saw pretty much the same wildlife, including lots
of mongoose and some good sightings of the rare Colobus monkeys
we'd seen earlier. The tsetse fly were being particularly bothersome
until Wilfred stopped at a tree, broke off some branches and gave
one to each passenger. In no time at all, the tsetse flies had gone!
We relaxed in the early evening before going to dinner. It was our
last night at Grumeti and, unbeknown to us, Karen led us to a surprise
dinner that was planned for the two of us... the plunge pool area
was lit with lanterns and a table for two was set. There was also
a gift for Becky at the table - a Masai bracelet. Very romantic
and a wonderful surprise.
